EXHIBITION AT HAVE A BUTCHERS
15TH SEPTEMBER - 6th OCTOBER 2023
HAVE A BUTCHERS proudly presents PETAL by Bex Day, a solo exhibition and debut launch of her first photographic book.
PETAL celebrates the uniqueness of the vulva and demystifies the reality of what it is to own a vulva in society as we know it. With fearless and refreshing sincerity, Day champions realistic representations and invites her audience to take an up close and personal look at what makes every vulva simultaneously unique and homogenous, and importantly - something to be celebrated.
The London based photographer and director comments, “I’ve always believed that rigid beauty ideals are a burden to our society, inhibiting freedom and expression of who we are. Wxmen are so regularly forced to bear the weight of these expectations and as a result our bodies are often left shrouded in shame or hidden away in the hopes that they can swerve judgement.
Challenging these rigid beauty ideals has always been the focus of my work, and PETAL felt like the right, natural progression. I wanted to subvert standardised beauty by focusing on the uniqueness of the vulva and celebrating the similarities and differences they share.” - Bex Day
Every vulva pictured in the collection is covered, to varying degrees, by a single flower or petal that in some way holds a particular sense of significance to the individual. Images are accompanied by a written account from the subject, detailing their own feelings and experiences of their body: deeply personal stories of love, loss, pleasure, pain, survival, rebirth and reclamation.
