ALICE HAWKINS
Self-portrait as Dolly Parton, Comfort Inn Downtown, Nashville, Tennessee, 2011, Alice Hawkins
Alice Hawkins is a British artist-photographer whose work examines the societal definitions of femininity and gender. Her images offer the promise of new realities: ones in which we might be free to be our finest selves – or selves we have not yet imagined. Hawkins has exhibited internationally alongside publishing in journals like Vogue, LOVE, and Pop. ‘Dear Dolly’ (2023) is the photographer's second book, after the first entitled ‘Alice’s Adventures’ (2017).

EXHIBITION & BOOK LAUNCH AT HAVE A BUTCHERS
4TH MAY - 2ND JUNE 2023
HAVE A BUTCHERS proudly presents ‘Dear Dolly’, an exhibition by British artist-photographer Alice Hawkins.
In ‘Dear Dolly’, Hawkins presents hyper-real photographic self-portraits appropriating the imagery and guises employed by country western sensation and American dream, Dolly Parton.
Hawkins states ‘I have always embraced my fantasies through my photography. Sought the unfashionable, audacious, gaudy and glamorous. I use my work as a guise to experiment with my identity as a woman because I have dreams of being as brave and ostentatious myself.’
‘Dear Dolly’ illustrates in a symbolic way how Parton dismantles stereotypes surrounding class and female representations through her music and appearance, exploring constructs of character emphasising the freedom to become whoever we want.
This work is nominally about one of the biggest country music stars of all time, but it’s also about Alice. It is addressed to one person but it is for all who can understand the desire to transform and to celebrate the Self.
Dear Dolly also stars a series of friends, family and Dolly fans who adorn make-up, costumes, props and prosthetics to manipulate their appearance into a personalized semblance of Dolly Parton. Personal memorabilia from Hawkins’ project made over a decade, including her sketchbook diaries, will be displayed throughout the exhibition.
For twenty years, Hawkins has traversed the world of fashion photography, challenging the social definitions of femininity. Hawkins work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo shows and published in journals such as Vogue, Love and Pop, as well as collaborating on many fashion brand campaigns.
The show coincides with the launching of Hawkins’ book ‘Dear Dolly’, published by Baron Books.
